Privacy Policy
Melissa for Educators AI Platform
Effective Date: February 16, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you and your students use Melissa.
1. Information We Collect
From Teachers/Admins
- Account data: name, email, password, school affiliation.
- Payment data (processed by Stripe).
- Usage data and content you create (lesson plans, assignments, etc.).
From Students (provided by you or self-entered)
- Minimal identifiers: names, class codes, picture passwords (K–5), learning preferences, progress history, submissions, and AI interaction data.
- No student email addresses are collected unless you explicitly provide parental consent and we receive it.
Automatically Collected
- Usage and device data (IP address, browser type, pages visited) for security and analytics.
AI Processing
Content is sent to Anthropic (Claude) to generate lessons, feedback, etc. Anthropic's privacy practices apply to that data while in their systems.
2. How We Use Information
- Provide and improve the Service (including the full “Prepare a Class” cascade).
- Generate individualized content, feedback, grading, and TIA-ready documentation.
- Communicate with you (transactional emails only).
- Comply with legal obligations and protect the Service.
We do not use student data to train AI models, for marketing, or for any non-educational purpose.
3. Sharing and Disclosure
- With service providers (Supabase, Stripe, Anthropic, Vercel) under strict data-processing agreements.
- With your school/district administrators if they have oversight of your account.
- In business transfers (with notice).
- When required by law.
We never sell student data.
4. Children's Privacy – COPPA
Melissa is designed for K-12 use. For students under 13:
- We rely on the school-consent exception to COPPA. By using the Service for your students, you (or your school) represent that you have obtained any required parental consent or that the use is school-authorized for educational purposes only.
- We collect only the minimum data necessary.
- Parents/guardians may contact their child's teacher or us at hello@melissaforeducators.ai to review, correct, or delete their child's information. We will respond within a reasonable time and in coordination with the teacher/school.
5. FERPA Compliance
We act as a “school official” with legitimate educational interest under FERPA. Student education records we maintain on your behalf are used only to provide the Service and are not redisclosed without your authorization (or as permitted by FERPA).
6. Data Security
We use industry-standard measures (encryption, access controls, Row-Level Security in Supabase). No method is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Data Retention
- Teacher data: while account is active + 1 year after.
- Student data: while the class is active and for 30 days after termination for export, then securely deleted unless legal retention applies.
8. Your Rights
- Access, correct, or delete your data (subject to legal obligations).
- For student data: exercise rights through the teacher/school; we will assist.
- Opt-out of non-essential cookies (see cookie banner).
9. International Users
If you are outside the U.S., data may be transferred to and processed in the United States.
10. Changes and Contact
We may update this policy and will post the new version with a new effective date. Questions: hello@melissaforeducators.ai.
