- Melissa is a K-12 lesson planning tool for teachers. Please categorize it as Education, not as “AI” or “Chat.”
- Allow the domains listed below over HTTPS (port 443).
- Student use requires no student email accounts and no software installation. It runs in the browser.
- We are a FERPA school official and rely on the COPPA school consent exception. We never sell student data and never use it to train AI models.
What Melissa is
Melissa is a web application that helps K-12 teachers plan lessons and create classroom materials: lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, puzzles, and presentations. It is used by teachers for instruction and, in some classrooms, by students to complete assigned work. It is not a general purpose chatbot, and it is not social media. The correct filtering category is Education.
Domains to allow
A teacher or student browser contacts only the hosts below, all over HTTPS on port 443. Allowlisting exactly these is sufficient for full functionality.

The Stripe and Google hosts are only contacted when a teacher chooses to upgrade or to export to Google. They are not required for core classroom use. If your filter allows domains by suffix, allowing melissaforeducators.ai and its subdomains covers the application itself.
How to categorize Melissa
If Melissa is currently blocked, it is most often because the domain is new and not yet categorized, or because it was placed in an AI or chat category by default. Melissa is an instructional planning tool for educators. We ask that it be categorized under Education or Educational Institutions, and specifically not under general AI, chatbots, or social networking.
We have submitted the domain for Education categorization to the major filtering vendors. If your district uses a vendor not yet reflected, we are glad to complete a categorization request with them. Contact us at the address below.
Traffic and technical details
- All traffic is HTTPS over port 443. No other ports are used.
- No browser extension, plugin, or installed software is required.
- No inbound connections to school devices are needed.
- The application is hosted on Vercel. Data is stored with Supabase in the United States.
Student data, privacy, and compliance
- FERPA. We act as a school official with a legitimate educational interest. Student records are used only to provide the service and are not redisclosed without authorization.
- COPPA. For students under 13 we rely on the school consent exception and collect only the minimum data necessary.
- Minimal student data. No student email addresses are required. Younger students sign in with a class code and a picture password. We collect names, class membership, submissions, and learning progress.
- No sale, no ad targeting, no model training. We never sell student data, never use it for advertising, and never use it to train AI models.
- Security. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with row level security isolating each teacher and class.
- Data processing agreement. A DPA is available for districts on request.
Subprocessors
Melissa uses a small set of service providers under data processing agreements: Vercel (hosting), Supabase (database, authentication, and storage), Anthropic (the Claude AI model that generates content), and Stripe (payment processing, teacher accounts only). Content a teacher generates is sent to Anthropic to produce lessons and feedback. Student data is not used to train AI models.
